How the rent calculation works
We divide weekly rent by seven to get an unrounded daily rate, multiply by 365 or 366 days, then divide by twelve for the average month. Each displayed result is rounded to the nearest cent only at the end. The South Australian Government publishes this calendar-month method; the tool uses it as a transparent budgeting estimate for readers across Australia.
For example, $700 per week is $1,400 per fortnight and $2,800 per four weeks. Over 365 days, it averages $3,041.67 per month and totals $36,500. A 366-day estimate is $100 higher over the year.
Why your rent payment may look different
An average monthly estimate spreads the year evenly. A charge calculated for specific dates can differ because months have different lengths, or because your agreement specifies a particular payment period. A 52-week budgeting convention covers 364 days, so it also differs from a full calendar year.
Check your tenancy agreement, rent ledger and the guidance for the property’s jurisdiction before changing a payment. Ask the advertiser or manager to explain the period covered if a figure is unclear.
Build the rest of your budget
Rent is one line in your household budget. Separately allow for food, transport, utilities and other commitments. Before a move, estimate the payments due before your next income arrives. The moving-cost planner can help you add the amounts you have been quoted.
This calculator converts prices; it does not decide what you can afford or whether a landlord will approve an application.
